FRIDAY 18 JULY 2008- PRICES OF TYRES INCREASE BY 10-18 PER CENT

Prices of tyres increase by 10-18 per cent

KOTA KINABALU:

The prices of locally made and imported tyres as well as retread tyres in the country, Sabah included, have been increased by between 10 and 18 per cent effective this month. Service (labour) charges have also been raised to 20 per cent, Sabah West Coast, Kudat and Interior Residencies Tyre Dealers’ Association President Candy Wong announced in a statement yesterday. She explained that the adjustment was prompted by the soaring prices of raw materials such as the natural and synthetic latex and relevant chemicals in the wake of global fuel price increase. This has inevitably forced the manufacturers to increase the prices of tyres and the dealers too have no choice but to follow suit. The prices of new tyres for normal- cars have been increased by 10 per cent while those for the commercial and heavy vehicles by 15 per cent. As for the retread tyres, the price hike was by 18 per cent. Wong noted that the adjustment was unanimously endorsed by the Malaysia Association of Tyre Retreaders and Dealers Societies during a meeting held in Ipoh on Monday, in which she was also present. She however urged tyre dealers in the State not to charge more than the above mentioned percentage.
