THURSDAY 10 JULY 2008- FUEL DEBATE WILL BENEFIT PUBLIC: MINISTER

Fuel debate will benefit public: Minister

KUALA LUMPUR:

Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said yesterday he believes his debate with Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 15 will help the public to better understand why the Government had to raise fuel prices last month. He said that as the Information Minister it was his responsibility to provide an explanation to the people on issues in the country and that there should not be any anxiety that the Government was taking a risk by holding the debate. “I see Anwar as a bigger risk as he always assumes he is a great leader with many followers. “The debate is also an opportunity for me to tell the people that his (Anwar’s) ways are wrong and that he is not that great,” Ahmad Shabery told Bernama at the Parliament lobby. He admitted that the debate was something new in the country and there was bound to be concern among some of the people. On Tuesday, the up-coming debate received mixed reaction from Parliamentarians. Some backbenchers wanted the debate to .be called off because they felt that it would not resolve any problem or change the differing views and that there was a possibility that Anwar would use it to further confuse the public. - Bernama
