KOTA KINABALU:

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) last year secured RM9.7 million in research grants for 92 projects. Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony for some 200 postgraduate students at the UMS Hall yesterday, UMS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kamaruzaman Hj Ampon said the amount last year was an increase of 46 percent over the previous year’s grant of RM4.7 million for 63 projects. UMS is ranked seventh out of 11 local universities in grants secured, said Kamaruzaman, who urged the students to understand the university ‘ objectives, including to achieve academic excellence internationally in science, technology, engineering, business, economics, politics and social science. He also urged them to discover new knowledge and utilise it effectively to develop the community besides promoting an intellectual community among them. At a press conference later, he said students are encouraged to share their experiences and opinions here, adding the feedback from international students, among them from England, has been positive. Asked about future enrolments, Kamaruzaman said UMS is targeting over 5,000 students by 2015, adding there are plans to provide a campus shuttle service to ensure students’ safety.
