John Lee first Metropolitan Archbishop of KK


KOTA KINABALU:


Bishop Datuk John Lee has been appointed the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Kota Kinabalu following the elevation of the Diocese of Kota Kinabalu to a Metropolitan See. Pope Benedict had on May 23 announced the erection of a new ecclesiastical province of Kota Kinabalu, formerly under the province of Kuching, and raised the Diocese of Kota Kinabalu to a Metropolitan See. This would mean Kota Kinabalu Diocese would be an Archdiocese with the Dioceses of Keningau and Sandakan as suffragan sees. Archbishop Lee was born in Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu) in 1933, the sixth child of the late catechist Thomas Lee Yen Chiang and Beatrice Ho Nyuk Kyau. He was ordained a priest in 1964 and consecrated aBishop in 1987. The Catholic population of the Province of Kota Kinabalu is about 310,000, about 9.8 per cent of the 3.1 million inhabitants.
