WEDNESDAY-9 JULY 2008- MAS TO STOP FLIGHTS TO 15 DESTINATIONS

MAS to stop flights to 15 destinations

KUALA LUMPUR:

In line with its Business Turnaround Plan, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was forced to cease flights to 15 destinations which suffered heavy losses. Transport Minister, Datuk Ong Tee Keat, said MAS management was forced to make the bitter decision and has nothing to do with politics. “The destinations are KL-Manchester, KL-Vienna, KL-Zurich, KL-Fukuoka, KL-Nagoya, KL-Ahmedabad, KL-Kolkata, KL-Pontianak, KL-Xian, KLChengdu, KL-Cairo, KuchingPerth, Kuching-Sydney, Langkawi-London and Penang-London,” he said in Dewan Rakyat here yesterday. Ong was responding to a question by Fong Po Kuan (DAP-Batu Gajah) on which MAS routes were facing losses. He said MAS would cease the flights in stages. On whether there were plans to let low-cost airline, AirAsia Bhd, take over the routes, Ong said the matter required study and discusions with all sectors, including the two airlines before a decision was made. - Bernama
