MONDAY-7 JULY 2008- NOR MOHAMED REITERATES NOT CONTESTING IN POLLS

Nor Mohamed reiterates not contesting in polls

TASEK GELUGOR:

Second Finance Minister and Tasek Gelugor Member of Parliament Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop is sticking to his decision not to contest in the Umno elections. “I stick to my stand not to contest at the branch, divisional or supreme council level,” he said after officiating at a nine-a-side football tournament for the Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Cup at Sekolah Menengah Agama Al-Irsyad in Padang Sena here yesterday. He said the decision not to contest was in line with his promise made before the March 8 general election. In that election, incumbent and former Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Mohd Sharif Omar gave way for him to vie for the seat. With that decision, Nor Mohamed will not challenge Mohd Sharif ‘for the Tasek Gelugor Umno Division Chief’s post. Elaborating on his decision, he said he had to pay greater attention on other matters, like the hike in price of goods in the past 10 months. Meanwhile, at the same news conference, Mohd Sharif voiced his desire to continue serving as the Tasek Gelugor division chief if he had the support. He said he was willing to square off with anyone who wanted to challenge him. “This is a democratic country. As a fee-paying member, anyone can be proposed, elected or vote. That is the principle,” he said. –Bernama
